Radiometer in Arylic: kinetic energy from light in this Eames era vintage Lucite block sculpture with encased radiometer. Light heats up the "vanes" which then heat up the very thin gas left in the bulb- the black side of the vane is hotter than the colored side and any gas molecule that comes into contact with it flies off at a faster speed imparting impulse to the rotor. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to buy radiometers and other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #CrookesRadiometer #radiation #radiometer #light #lightmill #physics #physicstoy #photon #thermodynamics #science #kineticenergy #momentumtransfer #recoil #impulse #angularmomentum #scienceisawesome

Emes era? Isn't he still alive😂

It’s notable that even such a “simple” classical device doesn’t have a completely convincing theory of operation.

ila_he__

Why it doesn't stoooop? 😮😦🙇

ibuynewstuff

@ila_he_ there’s always lights that’s why

This is sort of like a light engine instead of the Stirling ones I’ve got.

I have something like this from my dad but never knew what it was i do now lol thanks 😁

fossilbluff

My radiometers always fail from eventual overburden if friction between the needle and the thimble.

"kinetic energy from light" is a little misleading!

the wobble is cus each vane is a diff colour right?

Physics makes me happy for some reason

wookieewright

@physicsfun I thought the radiometer was powered by "thermal creep" on the vain edges...might have it backwards but recall this being up for debate a while ago.

xtim777

It’s simple

@misshepburn ❤️🥑❤️👍

It's a black body

gerwinmuller29

This have we in our phisic class

Why are we not funding this? The applications for using kinetic energy from light could be endless

pinar_waleed

So it won’t work in a dark room amiright ?
